History
Bibi Ka Maqbara was built in the late 17th century by Azam Shah, son of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, in memory of his mother. Its design deliberately echoes the Taj Mahal — the same central dome, the same formal charbagh garden layout, the same reflecting water channels — which has earned it the popular nickname "Mini Taj Mahal." It's built largely in stone and lime plaster rather than the marble used throughout the Taj, but up close the detailing on the lower section, which is faced in marble, is genuinely impressive.
What to Look For
Walk the full length of the formal garden approach before you reach the tomb itself — the symmetry and the framed view of the dome down the central water channel is the classic photo, and it's worth arriving early enough to get it without a crowd in frame. The perforated marble jali screens around the actual grave chamber are some of the finest detailing on the whole structure; don't rush past them.
